Here’s what I mean:

When I moved to Italy, I had this detailed plan to build my coaching business. I set strict goals and timelines, thinking if I just followed them, everything would fall into place. But reality hit hard. After my brain surgery a few years earlier, my energy and focus were limited. Long hours weren’t an option anymore, and my original plan crumbled. I had to adjust my goals, taking smaller, more realistic steps based on what I could actually manage.


Life happens—funding changes, new challenges pop up, or you get insights along the way that force you to rethink everything. Nonprofits face the same challenge. You might start with a clear vision, but when things shift, sticking rigidly to your original plan can leave you feeling stuck. Instead, adjusting your goals as you gather more information helps you stay effective and move forward, even when things don’t go as expected.

One of the biggest mistakes nonprofits make is feeling like they have to stick to the original plan no matter what. But the truth is, flexibility is your best friend. 


As you start working on projects, you’ll gather new information that can change everything—whether it’s feedback from the community, shifts in funding, or unexpected speedbumps.

When I first started building systems for my business, I thought I had everything mapped out. But once I started putting those plans into action, I realized some processes weren’t working as efficiently as I hoped. 


Instead of forcing myself to stick to a plan that wasn’t working, I made tweaks along the way. Each adjustment made my business run smoother and helped me hit my goals faster.

  • Are we on track to meet our goals?

  • Has anything changed that we need to account for?

  • Are there any roadblocks slowing us down?

This kind of reflection makes it easier to spot when things need tweaking. I learned this the hard way in my business—waiting too long to reassess meant I spent time chasing goals that no longer made sense. Once I started scheduling regular check-ins, I was able to adjust faster and stay aligned with what really mattered.

For nonprofits, this process is incredibly important. When you reassess your goals often, you’re able to pivot quickly and keep making progress, even when unexpected challenges pop up.


Integrating Flexibility and Transparency Into Your Goal-Setting Process

It’s not as complicated as it sounds—it just takes a few key steps to make sure you’re always on track while staying adaptable.

  2. Break down your goals into smaller milestones – These allow you to reassess progress regularly and make changes as needed without derailing the entire plan.

  3. Communicate progress openly – Make sure your team knows what’s happening and why. Share updates on how your goals are evolving.

  4. Involve your team in regular reviews – Whether it’s monthly or quarterly, get together with your team to review goals, celebrate wins, and make adjustments.

  5. Be open with donors and stakeholders – Let them know when things change and how their support is making a difference. This builds trust and keeps them engaged.


For nonprofits, applying this approach makes it easier to stay focused on the mission, even when things don’t go as expected. Just like I learned through trial and error in my own business, having a flexible, transparent goal-setting process ensures you’re always moving forward, even if the path looks different than you first imagined.
